- Updated Oct 2026
Gold mangalsutra price is never one fixed number, because the gold rate changes every day. What stays the same is the method. Once you know the weight and karat, you can work out the bill yourself.
Most people search for gold mangalsutra designs with price, but a printed tag goes out of date by the next morning. This page shows gold mangalsutra designs photos with price formulas instead of tags. Each design lists an approximate weight. Use the steps below with that day's rate, and you will know what a fair gold mangalsutra with price breakup should look like. The same method works for the 22k gold mangalsutra price, 18k diamond pieces and silver.

Fancy Short Mangalsutra Designs with Price Formula
Short pieces sit at the collarbone and use less gold, so the bill stays easier to plan. Each picture shows an approximate weight. Multiply that weight by the day's rate for its karat, then add making charges and 3% GST.

The open square uses less metal than a solid pendant, so it looks bigger than its weight. The double bead line gives it a fuller feel at the neck.
Ask your jeweller: Check the frame thickness. Very thin open frames can bend, so ask for a sturdy gauge.
Light Weight Modern Daily Wear Mangalsutra Design
A light weight mangalsutra in the 2 to 6 g range is where most daily wear buying happens. Small changes in weight change the price here more than people expect, so ask for the exact net gold weight. See more ideas on our daily wear mangalsutra design page.

An open heart in 18k rose gold looks modern and stays light. Since it is 18k, the per gram rate is lower than 22k.
Ask your jeweller: Rose gold is usually 18k. Check the stamp reads 18K750 and the HUID is clear.

Silver Mangalsutra Price: Chandi Designs
A silver mangalsutra price works the same way: weight x silver rate + making + 3% GST. Silver rates are far lower than gold, so making charges can be a big part of the bill. Browse more on our silver mangalsutra page.

How Gold Mangalsutra Price Is Calculated
Every jeweller in India uses the same basic formula. Only the numbers change from shop to shop and day to day.
Price = (net gold weight x that day's rate for the karat) + making charges + 3% GST
- Net gold weight: the weight of gold only. Black beads, stones and thread should not be billed at the gold rate.
- Day's rate: the per gram rate for 22k, 18k or 14k on the day you buy. The shop board shows it.
- Making charges: the jeweller's labour, given as a percentage of gold value or a fixed amount per gram.
- GST: 3% on the gold value plus making charges.
Worked example 1 (22k, example rate only). Say a short vati piece has 8 g of net gold. If the 22k rate is ₹10,000 per gram (an example number, not today's rate), gold value = 8 x 10,000 = ₹80,000. If making is 12%, add ₹9,600. Subtotal = ₹89,600. GST at 3% = ₹2,688. Total = ₹92,288.
Worked example 2 (18k diamond, example rates only). A pendant has 5 g of 18k gold and 0.20 carat of diamonds. If the 18k rate is ₹8,200 per gram, gold = ₹41,000. If diamonds are ₹50,000 per carat, diamonds = ₹10,000. If making is ₹900 per gram, making = ₹4,500. Subtotal = ₹55,500. GST at 3% = ₹1,665. Total = ₹57,165.
Worked example 3 (silver, example rate only). A chandi piece weighs 12 g. If the silver rate is ₹100 per gram, silver = ₹1,200. If making is a flat ₹600, subtotal = ₹1,800. GST at 3% = ₹54. Total = ₹1,854.
Put your own day's rate into the same steps and you will know the mangalsutra gold price before the salesperson does.
Karat Purity Table: 22k vs 18k vs 14k
The karat sets the rate per gram. Lower karat means less pure gold and a lower rate, but also a harder metal that holds stones better.
| Karat | Gold content | Hallmark grade | Best use in a mangalsutra |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k | 99.9% | 24K999 | Too soft for jewellery, used for coins |
| 22k | 91.6% | 22K916 | Vati, coin and plain gold pendants, gold beads |
| 18k | 75% | 18K750 | Diamond settings, rose gold, fine modern chains |
| 14k | 58.5% | 14K585 | Light office pieces, more scratch resistant |
| 9k | 37.5% | 9K375 | Budget pieces, low resale value |
A rough way to estimate a lower karat rate: 18k rate is close to 22k rate x 75 / 91.6. Shops round this differently, so always ask for the exact board rate. The 18 carat gold mangalsutra price will usually be lower per gram, but diamond work adds to it.
One honest note: a "1 gram gold" mangalsutra in many shops is gold-plated or micro-plated brass or copper. It is not one gram of solid gold and has no gold resale value. It is fine as fashion jewellery, just do not pay gold prices for it.
Hallmark and HUID Check Before You Pay
BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold by jewellers in India. A hallmarked mangalsutra carries three marks, usually on the pendant back or clasp:
- The BIS triangle mark.
- The purity grade, such as 22K916 or 18K750.
- A 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique ID).
Use a loupe or your phone camera zoom to read the marks. You can check the HUID in the government's BIS CARE app, which shows the karat and the type of article. If the app says "pendant" and you are buying a full necklace, ask why.
Your bill should show: gross weight, net gold weight, stone or bead weight, karat, rate used, making charges, HUID and GST. Keep it safe. You will need it for exchange, resale or insurance.
How to Save on Making Charges
Making charges can be 6% to 25% of gold value, or a fixed amount per gram. Two pieces of the same weight can have very different bills because of this.
- Machine chains cost less. Plain machine-made chains have lower making than handmade vati or filigree pendants.
- Ask for per gram making on heavy pieces. On a 40 or 50 g piece, a fixed per gram charge is often cheaper than a percentage.
- Check wastage. Some shops add "wastage" on top of making. Ask for one combined figure.
- Exchange old gold. Most jewellers accept old hallmarked gold at the day's rate minus a small deduction. This reduces the cash you pay.
- Buy outside peak days. Around big festivals, shops are busy and less flexible on making. Normal weeks give more room to talk.
- Compare same-day quotes. Ask two shops for the full breakup on the same day so the gold rate is equal.
Gold Mangalsutra Price by Weight Band
Instead of fixed rupee tags, use these formulas. R is the day's rate for your karat, M is the making percentage. Total = weight x R x (1 + M) x 1.03.
| Weight band | Typical designs | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 g | Bar, tiny coin, bracelet | (1 to 4) x R x (1 + M) x 1.03 |
| 5 to 7 g | Short vati, small CZ pendant | (5 to 7) x R x (1 + M) x 1.03 |
| 8 to 12 g | Medium vati, double strand | (8 to 12) x R x (1 + M) x 1.03 |
| 15 to 25 g | Long mangalsutra, gold bead mala | (15 to 25) x R x (1 + M) x 1.03 |
| 40 to 50 g | Heavy bridal, temple pendants | (40 to 50) x R x (1 + M) x 1.03 |
For diamond pieces, add the diamond value (carat x per carat rate) before GST. For more weight ideas, see our 5 gram gold mangalsutra and 10 gram gold mangalsutra pages.
Mangalsutra questions answered
What is the gold mangalsutra price for 10 grams?
Take 10 x the day's 22k rate per gram, add making charges, then add 3% GST. If making is 12%, the total is about 10 x rate x 1.12 x 1.03. Check the shop board rate on the day you buy.
Is 18 carat gold mangalsutra price lower than 22k?
Per gram, yes, because 18k has 75% gold against 91.6% in 22k. But 18k is mostly used for diamond and fine designs, which can carry higher making and stone costs. Compare the full bill, not only the rate.
What is the chandi ka mangalsutra price?
Chandi pieces are billed as weight x the day's silver rate + making + 3% GST. Because silver is low cost per gram, many shops sell silver mangalsutra on a fixed tag. Ask for the 925 stamp and the weight either way.
How is diamond mangalsutra price worked out?
It is 18k gold weight x 18k rate, plus diamond carat x per carat rate, plus making, plus 3% GST. Ask for the total diamond weight, colour and clarity on the bill. Lab grown diamonds cost less per carat than natural ones.
Where can I see mangal sutra ki design gold with price?
Our gallery pages list approximate weights for every design, so you can apply the formula on this page. Start with gold mangalsutra design photos and note the weight of the ones you like.
Why do two shops quote different mangalsutra gold price for the same design?
The gold rate is usually the same on a given day, so the gap comes from making charges, wastage, bead weight billed as gold, or stone pricing. Ask both shops for a full written breakup and compare line by line.
